MORE MEMORIES Our family
came to live at Piesse Brook on a small orchard not far from Paull’s (then
known as the “Rhubarb King”). My brothers and I walked three miles to school.
We had a short cut through Bateman’s property. We had to cross over the brook
on a log. I was always scared of falling in. One of the things I remember – Miss Serventy, our teacher, used to drive down from Kalamunda and park up the road. She was running late one day, so all us kids decided to run up the hill and hide in the bush. After looking around for a while she spotted somebody with a red dress. We all had to come in and line up to be punished. She never had a cane, she used a black-boy stick. I can tell you – it hurt! After living
on a small orchard for a few years, we shifted to another place not far from
the school, which was better. I think that Piesse Brook would be the only
school that didn’t have a playground – all our sport was held on the road.
